Why the same day costs more by the evening

By four in the afternoon the same walk costs more than it did at nine. Compensation is muscular work, funded hour by hour, and when the funding thins the pattern degrades — which makes a good deal of adult clubfoot a late-afternoon condition.

Compensation is expensive in a way nobody measures

Walking with altered mechanics costs more energy than walking without them. That is a measurable thing, not a feeling: the same distance, the same speed, more work. Which means when you finish a day out and are flattened while everybody else is fine, you are not being dramatic and you are not unfit. You did a harder version of the same activity.

What makes it invisible is that the extra work is muscular and distributed — a bit more from the hip, a bit more from the trunk, constant small corrections at the ankle. None of it looks like anything. All of it is being paid for.

Function and burden are two different measurements. Almost everyone only ever measures the first one.

This is also the honest answer to being told you look fine. You probably do look fine, because compensation works. It is succeeding, at a price, and the price is not visible from outside — which is why the tenth item on that list above is on it.

The fourth row is the one worth understanding. While muscles are doing the compensating, they absorb the load. When they stop being able to, the same load goes into joints and ligaments instead. That transfer is why an ordinary walk can be fine for six miles and expensive for the seventh.

And the fifth row explains something people find genuinely confusing: that the worst day is often the one after. That is not the injury appearing late. It is the recovery cost of tissue that took load it does not usually take.

The first item on the right is the trap. Rest feels like the obvious response to fatigue, and total rest lowers exactly the capacity that fatigue is a shortage of. What works better is doing less in one go and more overall — which is unsatisfying advice, and reliably effective.

Compensation and fatigue

Why do symptoms only appear when I am tired?
Because compensation is muscular work rather than a fixed structural arrangement. While the muscles have capacity the pattern holds and costs you nothing visible; as they fatigue the pattern degrades and the load lands somewhere less able to take it.
Does walking cost more energy with clubfoot?
Generally yes. Altered mechanics raise the metabolic cost of walking, which is why the same distance can leave you more tired than it leaves other people, and why fatigue is a symptom in its own right rather than a personal failing.
Is this fatigue or deconditioning?
Usually both, and they feed each other. Doing less reduces capacity, which makes the same day harder, which encourages doing less again. Breaking that loop is the most valuable single intervention.
Can I train my way out of it?
You can raise the ceiling substantially, which is not the same as removing the cost. Stronger calves, hips and trunk mean the pattern holds for longer before it degrades, and that is what most people actually want.
Why do people say I look fine?
Because compensation succeeds most of the time. Function and burden are different measurements, and someone can be walking perfectly well while paying far more for it than anyone watching would guess.
Should I rest more or move more?
Move more overall, but distribute it. Total rest lowers capacity, while long unbroken efforts overrun it. Spreading load across a day and a week works better than either extreme.
