Can it just go away?
True clubfoot, no. But a foot flagged on a scan sometimes does resolve (because )it was never clubfoot. Those two facts get tangled constantly, and the tangle is where false hope lives.
Somebody will tell you a story about a scan that showed clubfoot (club foot, or talipes equinovarus) and a baby born with perfectly normal feet. The story is almost certainly true. It just does not mean what it sounds like it means.
Below are six things parents get told while waiting. Turn each one over to see what actually holds up.
“My friend’s scan showed clubfoot and her baby was fine.” What actually happened
That baby almost certainly had a positional foot, or a foot that was simply hard to view on the day. Both are common, and both produce exactly this story.
What did not happen is a clubfoot correcting itself. The scan flagged a shape; the shape turned out to have an innocent cause. That is a scan limitation, not a recovery.
“There is still time for it to straighten out.” What actually happens
There is no mechanism. The bones sit in different relationships and the soft tissue is genuinely shorter. There is nothing folded that could unfold, and no process that lengthens tissue before birth.
A positional foot does straighten, usually in the weeks after birth once the baby can kick freely. But that is a normal foot doing what normal feet do.
“If I change how I sleep or move, it might help.” What the evidence says
Nothing you do during pregnancy changes how a foot has formed. Not sleeping position, not exercise, not diet, not supplements, not any therapy sold for the purpose.
Worth saying flatly because this question absorbs enormous energy at a point when there is nothing to be done and nothing you did wrong. See what causes clubfoot.
“The follow-up scan looked better, so it is resolving.” What that means
A better-looking follow-up can mean the first view was poor, the baby was positioned awkwardly, or the finding was never real. Any of those is good news.
What it cannot mean is that a structural clubfoot corrected between scans. And it still does not settle anything. The answer comes from someone holding the foot after birth.
“More fluid means more room, so it will sort itself out.” Partly right
Reduced fluid is associated with positional foot differences, and more room does plausibly let a positional foot sit more normally. So for that foot, the reasoning holds.
For true clubfoot it makes no difference. The problem is not where the foot has been resting.
“We should wait and see rather than treat straight away.” The cost of waiting
Newborn tissue remodels best in the first weeks, and that responsiveness fades. Waiting spends the most valuable part of the treatment window on a question the first examination already answers.
Untreated clubfoot does not improve with time or walking (it stiffens). There is nothing to be gained by watching, and something real to lose.
Where the hope actually belongs
None of this is an argument for despair, and it would be a poor page that left you there. The honest version is that the hope is real but it is pointed at the wrong thing.
Hoping the foot resolves before birth is hoping for something that does not happen. Hoping your baby walks, runs, plays and lives without much thought about their feet is hoping for the ordinary outcome of treated clubfoot. The second is far better grounded than the first.
You are not waiting to find out whether it goes away. You are waiting to find out whether it was ever there.
